Research Trends on Fiber Posts in Endodontically Treated Teeth: A Bibliometric Analysis

Purpose: This study aims to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global research trends on fiber post systems used in the restoration of endodontically treated teeth from 1996 to 2025.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection using selected keywords related to fiber-reinforced posts. Only original articles were included. Metadata were exported and analyzed using Biblioshiny (Bibliometrix R-package). Citation-based indicators, co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic evolution across three time periods (1996–2005, 2006–2015 and 2016–2025) were examined. Citation differences were evaluated using nonparametric statistical tests (Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U).
Results: A total of 651 articles were identified. The annual number of publications increased steadily over time, with a peak in 2008 (39 articles). The most productive authors included M. Ferrari and C. Goracci, while Brazil was the most prolific country, followed by Italy, Germany, the United States, and Türkiye. The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry was the leading source. Keyword analysis revealed a shift from basic bonding and mechanical testing in earlier years toward themes of adhesion, clinical rehabilitation, and dental trauma. Significant differences in citation counts were observed across publication periods (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Over the past 29 years, research on fiber posts has evolved from mechanical investigations to more clinically focused applications. The growing global collaboration and thematic shift highlight the maturing nature of this field. These findings can help inform future clinical research and development in post-endodontic restoration.
